Meet our New Young Adult Service Corps Volunteers!

“Our first task in approaching another people, another culture, another religion, is to take off our shoes, for the place we are approaching is holy. Else we may find ourselves treading on men’s dreams. More serious still, we may forget that God was here before our arrival.” - Max Warren, General Secretary of the Church Missionary Society (1942-1963)

Applications accepted for Episcopal Church educational scholarships

republished from the Episcopal Church's Newsline

Deadline is October 15

Applications are now being accepted for more than 60 scholarships available through the Episcopal Church. Earmarked for education and schooling for Episcopalians, the scholarship money  is derived from numerous trust funds that have amassed over the years.

The list of scholarships, the guidelines, the application form and the instructions for filling out the form – are available here: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/youngAdult/109462_110675_ENG_HTM.htm
The list of trust funds and scholarships is here: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/documents/ScholarshipTrustFunds121609.pdf

Applications are reviewed by scholarship subcommittees comprised of representatives from throughout the Church. Their recommendations are then reviewed and announced by the Scholarship Committee of the Episcopal Church.

Deadline for applications is October 15, 2011.  Funds will be dispersed for 2011-2012 applications and Spring 2012 requests.

Scholarship awards vary according to the availability of fund income. Payout rates are determined by the Episcopal Church Executive Council upon recommendation of its Investment Committee. Principal amounts of each fund are always maintained.

In the most previous granting of scholarships, 56 students were awarded $206,383.03.  According to the breakdown: Asian American (6), $25,000.00; Native American (10), $27,327.03;  Black (11); $48,000.00; Foreign Ministries (4), $5,200.00; Miscellaneous (2),  $9,000.00; Children Missionary (16),  $63,856.00; Hispanic Ministries (7), $28,000.00

EligibilityIn most cases, the scholarships are geared to particular audiences and students, explained Antoinette (Toni) Daniels, Co-director of Mission and Chair of the Scholarship Committee. “Trusts are given for particular areas of interest,” she said. “Some of the scholarships are very specific. In all cases the financial support is meant for Episcopalians.”

Among the specific communities are: American Indians/Native Americans, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latino/Hispanics, children of missionaries, medical missionaries, men in the ordination process, Pacific Island Americans, children of living or deceased bishops and clergy; Chinese girls; and others.

Requirements
In order to apply, Daniels stated, the applicant must:
- be an Episcopalian
- be a member of an Episcopal congregation
- have the endorsement of his/her bishop.
She stressed that only complete applications will be considered.

Change is in the air...again

For those who have not heard, Bishop Stacy Sauls will be taking over as Chief Operating Officer of the Episcopal Church Center with Sam McDonald heading the Mission Department. Both will begin in September at which time we will again move forward on the hiring of the vacant Officer position for Young Adult and Campus Ministries.
A big huge thank you to Gregory Bezilla for 6 months of incredible work in the office for Young Adult and Campus Ministries. You have been such a blessing to our community and we thank you for the vision, peace and enthusiasm you brought. Many blessings in your ministry at Rutgers!

Episcorific takes a break

In a Pentecost letter...

Hey Folks!

What’s black and white and three years old? Episcorific!

We’ve had a great three years. Thousands of people have downloaded each issue of our zine, and we’ve developed a group of fabulous contributors and a dedicated board. Our deepest thanks goes out to everyone who has helped us grow from a photocopied zine distributed to a few Texas churches into a widely read webzine.

A few months ago our board, which now includes seven people, met near Sewanee, TN to talk about the future of Episcorific. What is the purpose of Episcorific? Who do we want to reach and how? How can Episcorific build community and help young adults as they explore their faith and try to navigate those confusing years after leaving home? After lots of conversation, and working out our vision and mission with the help of a facilitator, we’ve decided to transition from a printable zine produced five or six times a year to a daily website. Episcorific has been reaching a wider audience with each issue. A website will allow us to make the most of our limited resources and publish artwork and writing more regularly. The upcoming website will continue to bring young adults in the Episcopal Church and beyond together by sharing essays, stories, art, photography, and poetry from contributors around the country. The new format will also allow us to add video into the mix, reach a wider audience and offer regular, daily content.

So here are some specifics: we hope to have regular columnists with a new article or blog post every day. In addition, we’ll continue to accept seasonal submissions, publishing great new writing and art at least once a week. We'll also be broadening the Episcorific network in the blogosphere, showcasing new writers and bloggers on an aggregated blogroll on our site. This website will have a new name (something easier to spell that still embraces the sense of joy in sharing our faith) which we’ll be announcing in future updates. Keep an eye out for occasional printed issues and anthologies, as well.

This is a big step for Episcorific, away from small scale and handmade to something more accessible and dynamic with the same grassroots spirit. Our mission and vision is clearer than ever, and we are excited to make it easier to connect, communicate and share with 20s/30s inspired by the Episcopal tradition. We want to make it possible to have difficult conversations, to widen our gaze beyond our navel as we figure out where we are going in this world.

We’ll be working on creating and updating a new website over the next months, so that we can launch the new site in Advent, the beginning of the church year. We’ll be a little quieter than usual during that time, but don’t worry, we’ll be back. In the meantime, pray for our process, our contributors and most of all the incredible community of readers we’ve built over the past three years. If you'd like to be part of the process, drop us a line, but regardless, keep writing, thinking, taking photographs, composing poems, contemplating, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated on this exciting new journey we’re taking together!

Peace and Pentecost power,
The Episcorific Board
